The Austin music scene has always been a melting pot, but lately, there is a distinct Nicaraguan pulse beating through the city. Luis Fiallos, known to his family and the local scene as wicho, is currently shaping a sound that’s a long-lost memory you just rediscovered. With a style that effectively blurs the lines between indie-pop and alternative rock, he is proving to be a songwriter who cares more about the weight of a feeling than just hitting a hook. On January 22, 2026, he is set to drop “el error,” the third look at his upcoming debut album escalas en la distancia.
wicho’s journey started with a childhood soundtrack of The Beatles and a teenage obsession with the blues. You can hear that DNA in his playing. A mix of melodic pop sensibilities and the soulful, expressive guitar work he picked up from studying the likes of B.B. King. When you add in the sophisticated, sharp textures of The Police, you get the foundation of what he’s doing today. He is an artist who appreciates what is offered to him, whether it’s a cup of coffee or a life lesson, and that humble, observant perspective shines through in his lyrics.
So far, the road to this album has been a successful one. His 2025 release “volar” captured the collective exhaustion of the daily grind, offering a dream-like escape that resonated with over 14,000 streams on Spotify alone. He followed that with the sensual, late-night atmosphere of “cuando te acercás,” which became an even bigger breakout with over 76,000 streams. People are clearly leaning into his ability to blend Latin rhythms with an alternative edge.
“el error” shifts the focus toward the internal struggles we all face. It’s an indie-alternative track that tackles the paralyzing doubt of a relationship that is slowly fading away. The song describes that heavy moment of wondering if you’re being brave or just making a massive mistake. With lyrics about missing the train and watching the distance between two people grow like the gap between seasons, it’s a song for anyone who has felt stuck in the past. wicho wants listeners to realize that while moving on is scary, staying in a place that makes you feel lonely and tired is even worse.
This single is just one piece of the seven-track journey he’s prepared for the full album release this April. Each song, from “musa” to “procura,” is a stop on a nostalgic trip through his life and influences. Whether he’s bringing the energy with his band Retro Cowgirl or baring his soul on a track like “el error,” wicho is making music that feels deeply human.
There is a quiet bravery in admitting you don’t have all the answers. Most of us spend our days pretending we’re on the right track, but wicho sits right in the middle of the “maybe” and finds the melody there. “el error” tells us that even when things break, we don’t have to stay in the wreckage.
Take a moment to sit with “volar” or “cuando te acercás” while we wait for January 22. They are honest pieces of a life being lived out loud. When the new track drops, let it be the permission you need to finally leave the station, even if you’re scared of where the next train is going.
